Education
Almost any job as an athletic trainer requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Many of the programs that are offered include education in both the classroom and in clinical settings. Various classes such as human anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and biomechanics are also often taken when studying for the profession. As a requirement for certain positions and to increase range of available jobs, many trainers also study for their masters or higher degrees.
Experience
To gain experience, many athletic trainers in training will enter programs that may consist of some type of internship in an athletic trainer's setting such as a high school or college. Most athletic trainers also begin as an athletic trainer assistant before entering the actual field to gain knowledge hands on before taking full responsibility of the job.
Licenses
In order to become an athletic trainer, one must be certified by the Board of Certification (BOC). Being certified requires an exam including written questions and practical applications as well as having a bachelors degree with a major in athletic training for an accredited program. To continue certification, medical-related courses and complying with the standards of practice is also required. A teaching certificate or license may also be required if an athletic trainer position at a high school also involves teaching in a classroom.
